Belgian referee Paul Allaerts wrongly allowed Celtic clemency when Hapoel threatened to score one of the most embarrassing goals of all time in the second period.
Samaras had put the ball out of play for an injury to skipper Stephen McManus and, when Hapoel sportingly played the ball back to Celtic, Glenn Loovens bizarrely ignored the gesture, allowing a confused Vucicevic to collect and head for glory.
He had an open goal and was ready to take it. With rampant hesitation and little apparent idea of how to handle the situation, however, the Belgian referee called play back for fear of a riot.
